When cleaning do not direct a strong hose at either the inner seal or the end cap. Cleaning is best with soapy water sponged or brushed on. When dry, dress the plastic with brush on black shoe polish.
Keep the shoe plates as clean as possible. Stones can get caught in the mating holes and sand particles can affect the release mechanism.
After cleaning a drop of thin oil on the axle by the inner seal can be useful to maintain free running and to prevent the rubber seal squeaking when rubbing on the axle.
Check your shoe plates and the hooks for excessive wear. Walk on your shoe plates as little as possible. The shoe plates have wear points to avoid any adverse effect on the pedal operation. But once these wear points show significant wear the shoe plates should be replaced.
Stripping the pedals to replace bearings etc. is described in the instruction leaflet. Whenever replacing the end caps, always smear some grease on the mating surfaces to ensure a watertight seal.
Riders have reported success in cleaning the bearings by soaking them in WD40 and then re-lubricating them with Tri-Flow.
