Gina Crawford wins Yeppon, Australia Ironman 70.3

2013.

In the weekend I raced and won the Ironman 70.3 in Yeppoon, Queensland, Australia. It was a great venue for a race set amongst a resort. I was backing up from the half ironman in Samoa last weekend. I had to do some big days midweek to keep the momentum going forward for the ironman distance and felt quite flat and awful during the week but came right with the rest day the day before the race. I had a great swim coming out about 20 seconds behind Lisa Marangan a very strong swimmer and the winner and course record holder of the race in 2012. I then practiced my pacing on the bike again as I did last week. It was really hard to not just do my usual go as hard as I can and catch everyone as soon as possible at the start of the bike and then grovel to the end. I ended up with the fastest bike split so I think that the pacing is working well and setting me up for a good run. I took the first half very conservatively and then let rip in the second half, caught her and then she stayed with me. We came onto the run together and I quickly made a gap and maintained it to the end winning by 6 min over Lisa and 12 minutes over Michelle Wu. I didn't feel good the last 6k but that is normal when I do half ironman races a week apart. All in all it was a great day and I hope will help with the strength and race fitness going forward to the ironman races ahead.

Next up is the Metaman Bintan in 2 weeks time. This is an iron distance race but I will race it conservatively with Kona just around the corner, I really want to use it to practice this bike pacing over the 180k. I will use it as a good training day and a good test in the heat and humidity. I then will race the Ironman 70.3 Sunshine Coast (p750) September 15th. It is just down the road from where I have been training here in Australia the last month.

Thanks for your support,

Gina
